Beat the heat and win some bucks in Minnesota Valley Electric Company service territory

Spring time is a good look on Minnesota, wouldn’t you say? And summer is a even better one! With some of our hottest days ahead of us, consider joining Minnesota Valley Electric Company’s (MVEC) energy-saving campaign: “Beat the Peak Energy Challenge.” The main premise of the campaign is to reduce energy usage on the most energy-intensive days of summer (i.e. the hottest).

The way the campaign works is that people can either work by themselves, or construct a team, and commit to lowering the energy consumption of their homes a couple days out of the month. MVEC will preselect what days will count toward the campaign and let homeowners know ahead of time. Between Memorial Day until Labor Day, is it estimated participants will be asked to curb energy use approximately 5-6 days a month for about 4-5 hours when energy use is at its highest.

Ways that homeowners can reduce their energy usage on these days can include anything from:

  • Turning the temperature up a few degrees on the thermostat
  • Turning all unneeded lights off
  • Doing chores, like laundry, on different days

Those who choose to compete in teams can see their team’s progress online with a real time leader board. At the end of the campaign, the teams that reduce the most will be eligible for a significant cash prize (over $20,000 total given out). Teams already signed up include the Minnesota Chapter of Cystic Fibrosis, Minnesota Military Family Foundation, the New Prague Chamber of Commerce, Friends of McColl Pond, JAGS Fastpitch Softball, the Belle Plaine High School Weight Room and St. Michaels School of Prior Lake. Beat the Peak Energy Challenge is free to sign up and a great way to get your community involved in energy-saving!

The deadline to form or join an existing team is Friday, May 24.
