Why not try something new? Bike Walk Week wants you! Travel a different way June 2-10.
Put a little joy into your travel trip – try biking and walking. Organizers of the annual Twin Cities Bike Walk Week are asking for your pledge to replace at least one car trip with biking or walking during this year’s Bike Walk Week, June 2-10, 2012, in hopes that you’ll develop a new, more active routine for getting around. Even if you already bike or walk to get around, please sign up and be counted!
Why do it? All of the Bike Walk Week activities highlight the advantages of getting around without the use of a car. Bicycling and walking are more than just leisure activities – they promote better health and a cleaner environment, and save you money. The average family can save $5,000-$10,000 per year by reducing the number of cars they own. Who’s doing it? Last year more than 10,000 people took the Bike Walk Week pledge, choosing active transportation over car travel. They discovered the benefits –such as better health, money saved, and a healthier environment. Join them this year for Bike Walk Week events. Attend events! A major focal point for the week is Bike Walk to Work Day, Thursday, June 9. In the Twin Cities area there are several other events throughout the week, including the American Heart Association Heart Walk, Grand Old Day, Women’s Wednesday, Yoga on the Greenway, and Bike Walk to the Twins Game on Sunday, June 12. New this year is the region’s first Cyclovia or “Open Streets” celebration, along Lyndale Avenue on Sunday, June 12. Communities around the state are also planning activities during the week.
