Energy Fit Homes

Do you have an Energy Fit Home?

The new Energy Fit Homes is a certificate program that focuses on energy efficient upgrades that are cost-effective to the homeowner. Primarily a Twin Cities metro program (but with hopes of expansion), it is being provided by the Center for Energy and Environment (CEE), a Minneapolis nonprofit that has been helping Minnesota residents reduce their energy use for 35 years, and Neighborhood Energy Connection, a Saint Paul based nonprofit that has delivered high quality energy conservation services for 29 years.

We spoke with Isaac Smith, the Energy Fit Homes Program Manager at Center for Energy and Environment, to learn more.

What do people like best about the program?

Isaac Smith: Homeowners enjoy the ease and low-cost of getting their home certified. Energy Fit Homes is a tangible way to show that your home meets these energy efficiency standards.

What are typical upgrades that people make to become certified as an Energy Fit Home?

Isaac Smith: Homes built before the building energy code was established in 1976 usually need attic insulation and air sealing. This cost-effective improvement prevents the air used to heat your home from escaping into the attic. The best way to find out what needs to be done in your home is to have an initial home assessment, where you will receive an Energy Fitness Score that prioritizes the steps towards certification based on energy savings and cost.

What are the benefits of being an Energy Fit Home?

Isaac Smith: Energy Fit Homes was designed for people who are buying, selling, or just staying put. All certified homes benefit from increased comfort and lower utility bills. Homeowners thinking about selling their home may also see a market edge at time of sale — studies have shown that of homes with “green” certificates have less time on the market and may experience a price premium, especially as more home buyers are becoming concerned with energy when making purchasing decisions.
