How Can We Reduce Our School's Carbon Footprint?

100 Schools, 3 years…How much energy can we save?

With the Minnesota Schools Cutting Carbon program you can save your school money and reduce your carbon footprint! The program is focused on helping schools reduce carbon in two ways:
      1. Supporting carbon-cutting student-led projects
      2. Improving school building operations and maintenance

Students: We want to help you connect with students across the state and give you free technical and financial resources to help you reduce energy use at your schools during the next three years. There are funds available now to help you get started, and during the second year of the initiative, school teams will be eligible for grants of up to $20,000 for innovative carbon-cutting projects.

School Administrators: We want to help you cut energy costs in your buildings and have free technical assistance to help you do so.

Best Candidates:

  • School buildings that indicate high-potential for energy savings: Schools enter their energy usage in the state’s B3 database, and we will evaluate this energy usage data.
  • A strong commitment by administration, faculty and students to make substantial reductions to emissions
  • Strong student leadership:
    • Already involved and determined to reduce their GHG emissions
    • Need further resources to implement their energy objects
