Human-powered elliptical machines produce energy (and sweat) at Bemidji State University

I’ve always been intrigued by the idea of actually turning the energy I expend running into power for my home or office. I mean really, if Dan, Maggie, Joel, Alexis and I spent the day on an energy-producing elliptical or something, couldn’t we offset the power we need to run our computers?

Based on some of the articles I’ve read, it sounds like we might have to get pretty buff to pull that off, but still it makes me wonder. What if we got every gym in Minnesota to convert to machines—treadmills, bikes and ellipticals—that could generate power? It seems like that could really add up.

Bemidji State University recently kickstarted a project that will help test this idea while providing a bit of their own power. It’s sure to be a project to watch. Read about their powerful new machines in this recent Bemidji Pioneer article!
