The Rural Renewable Energy Alliance, or RREAL, has partnered up with the Conservation Corps of Minnesota and Iowa to work to replicate RREAL’s Solar Assistance Program through outreach and education.
The Basics: To accomplish this work, RREAL is looking for highly motivated, action-oriented, and self-directed applicants interested in learning more about solar thermal. Three volunteers will be placed at RREAL’s headquarters in Pine River, MN; Conservation Corps offices in Iowa; and Red River Valley Community Action Agency in Grand Forks, ND. Volunteers will be responsible for carrying out RREAL’s Solar Assistance mission, training Conservation Corps members and facilitating community outreach regarding solar thermal.
Some Details: Applicants should be between the ages of 18 and 25. The positions will all last from January 7 through December 14, 2013 and will be 40 hours per week. The Solar Heat Specialists will assist RREAL in carrying out its Solar Assistance Program; perform solar air heat system installations; facilitate Conservation Corps crew trainings; conduct community outreach and conduct general project management tasks. These positions will have varied responsibilities and substantial authority to act independently, while assisting RREAL program coordinators, who will provide direct guidance and training as needed. The people in this position will have the opportunity to utilize their existing skills and to develop a variety of new skills that will increase future employability in the green jobs sector!

Sunny Successes: Those who are lucky enough to be placed in these positions will be building upon the success of RREAL’s statewide Solar Assistance Program is nearing completion. In partnership with nine community action agencies and the State of Minnesota, RREAL is striving to complete 213 installations by year’s end. When complete, this two-year project will have resulted in:
- 213 Families empowered with solar heat;
- 13,000 additional square feet of solar thermal collectors deployed;
- At least 8 full-time jobs maintained or created;
- Annual clean energy production of 1.7 Billion BTUs;
- Annual CO2 emission reductions of at least150 tons;
- 9 weatherization agencies trained in solar air heat design/install, and
- Increased regional energy security.
