On a trip to Washington DC over Memorial Weekend, I used their Capitol Bike Share program to tool around for the day. With 1,100 bikes in the fleet it is the biggest bike share program in the nation, and the experience was great.

The position will include a combination of grant project administration, direct interaction with students and YES! team advisers, and network development to expand YES! to serve 30-plus communities in west central and southwestern MN during 2011-2013.

Earlier this week the Rural Minnesota Energy Board (RMEB) toured two facilities and got to kick the tires on biomass harvesting equipment in Emmetsburg, Iowa. Below is more about what we saw and learned.

May 12, 2011, New Ulm, MN: Could there be a profitable use for “waste” and other effluents, through use of biogas digesters? Over 40 people met to learn the answer to this and other questions at an event hosted by Southwest Clean Energy Resource Team (SW CERT) held in the lower level of the New Ulm Public Library on May 12th, 2011.

You may not have known it, but there is a tremendous amount of thermal energy in waste water. This fact has folks in Brainerd wondering how they can harness that energy. A recent story by Becky Parker with Lakeland Public Television on May 18 highlights the innovative research being done around harvesting heating and cooling energy from city waste water.

Minnesota has not been known as a hotbed of EV activity in the past, but things are starting to move forward here.

If you’ve never been there, The Bakken Museum is a one-of-a-kind museum exploring the mysteries of our electrical world. The Bakken’s Green Energy Art Garden, started with a grant from Metro CERT, showcases innovative art that demonstrates that renewable energy generation can be fun, beautiful, and thought-provoking—as well as functional.

While years from completion, a board of directors in south central Minnesota is laying the groundwork to answer the chicken and egg question that has plagued renewable fuel development beyond the first generation of ethanol.

The answer Prairie Skies Biomass Co-op of Madelia has arrived at is that a cooperative and it’s fuel shed need to develop in unison.

Cleantech Open is inviting clean tech innovators to submit an application to enter the program and compete on a unique national platform for over $1 million in training, cash and start-up services for clean tech businesses. The application deadline is May 24, 2011.

April 29, 2011, Rochester, MN – Did you know that Rochester is home to Minnesota’s first electric car charging station? Over 60 people joined the Clean Energy Resource Teams (CERTs) and Cascade Meadow Wetlands & Environmental Science Center April 26 to learn more about electric cars and their needed infrastructure from utility representatives, and a University Extension educator.

Several years ago, CERTs teamed up with the Agricultural Utilization Research Institute (AURI ) to created the Minnesota Biomass Exchange.

We recently updated our statewide map of solar and small wind installers and dealers (based on the updated list compiled by the Office of Energy Security)… Wow, take a look at all the little suns on the map across the state! This got us thinking of the entrepreneurial energy that continues to build in the solar energy sector (both photovoltaic and thermal) here in Minnesota.

CERTs has been doing a series of webinars with ERM, the group that provides their expertise to the schools involved in Minnesota Schools Conserving Energy and Water (formerly Minnesota Schools Cutting Carbon). The webinar is designed for building operators and school administration to look more closely at best practices and lessons learned at schools.

The City of Maplewood started an environmental committee in 2004. In September of 2005 the Maplewood City Council adopted an Environmental and Natural Resources Commission ordinance and the committee became a full commission. The city has made some drastic improvements in their older buildings including new energy efficiency boilers, a new HVAC system, and indoor and outdoor lighting upgrades.
