Energy Assistance Program

Minnesotans may find themselves having to choose between paying their energy bill and other necessities — food, medicine and healthcare.

Minnesota’s Energy Assistance Program helps pay for heat and electricity costs for income-qualified households. The program can also arrange to repair or replace homeowners' broken heating systems.

Energy Assistance Program Facts

  • It’s free with grants of up to $1,400 — based on household size, income, and energy costs. 
  • In addition to the initial grant, crisis funds are available
    • Up to $600 to help prevent energy shutoffs, get energy reconnected, or get emergency fuel deliveries. 
    • Additional funds to help homeowners get their broken furnace repaired or replaced. 
  • Households may also get help paying their past due water bill
  • Renters and homeowners are eligible.

The Energy Assistance Program is funded by the U.S. Health and Human Services department and administered by the Minnesota Department of Commerce. 

Investor-owned utilities in Minnesota also provide support for low-income residents and those with special medical needs.
